A Volcanic and Cultural Expedition Through Northern Tanzania’s Hidden Gems
Starting & Ending in Arusha | With GameDrive Africa Ltd
Discover one of Tanzania’s most off-the-beaten-path experiences — a journey to the mystical Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano and the otherworldly landscapes of Lake Natron. This 4-day adventure offers a rare blend of geological wonder, scenic beauty, and deep cultural immersion with the Maasai communities of the Great Rift Valley.
Whether you’re an avid hiker, nature enthusiast, or cultural explorer, this trip promises awe-inspiring views, quiet moments in untouched wilderness, and the chance to summit the only active carbonatite volcano in the world.
About Ol Doinyo Lengai: The “Mountain of God”
Ol Doinyo Lengai — meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language — rises majestically from the East African Rift Valley floor, just south of Lake Natron. It is a one-of-a-kind active volcano, famous for producing natrocarbonatite lava — a rare, fast-flowing, and cooler type of lava found nowhere else on Earth.
Its unique lava glows black in daylight and hardens quickly, forming sharp, rugged surfaces. Unlike other fiery volcanoes, Lengai’s eruptions are relatively mild, making it accessible to intrepid trekkers with a sense of adventure. But make no mistake — the hike is steep and challenging, typically completed overnight to reach the summit by sunrise.
Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK), you’ll be met by a friendly GameDrive Africa representative and transferred to your comfortable lodge in Arusha. Take the day to relax, adjust to the altitude, and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Optional: Explore the vibrant local markets or enjoy a delicious dinner at the lodge.
