What to Expect on Your Materuni Day Tour

Morning Pick-Up & Scenic Drive
Your day begins with an early pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Enjoy a comfortable drive through picturesque countryside, passing small farms, banana groves, and the misty silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

Materuni Village Cultural Tour
Upon arrival in Materuni, you’ll be welcomed by local residents with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. Take a guided tour of the village, learning about the customs, daily life, and history of the Chagga people, one of Tanzania’s oldest and most respected ethnic groups.
Explore banana plantations, traditional homesteads, and hear firsthand stories about local customs, storytelling, and Chagga traditions passed down through generations.

 Authentic Coffee Experience
Next, you’ll join a hands-on session with local farmers who will guide you through the traditional coffee-making process — from harvesting and drying to roasting and grinding. Engage in the vibrant songs and rhythms that accompany this centuries-old ritual before enjoying a freshly brewed cup of organic Arabica coffee, grown and processed right in the village.

Hike to Materuni Waterfalls
Lace up your walking shoes for a guided hike through the verdant rainforest to reach the magnificent Materuni Waterfall — one of the tallest and most stunning falls in the Kilimanjaro region, plunging nearly 80 meters into a natural pool. The walk takes around 45 minutes and offers views of tropical flora, native birds, and occasional monkeys swinging in the treetops.
At the base of the waterfall, enjoy the cool mist and take in the natural beauty surrounding you. You may also take a dip in the refreshing pool if you’re up for it!

Traditional Local Lunch
After your hike, enjoy a homemade Tanzanian lunch, prepared by village hosts. Dishes may include staples like ugali, rice, vegetable stews, grilled plantains, and local favorites such as nyama choma (grilled meat). Vegetarian options are also available upon request. This meal is served al fresco, surrounded by the serenity of the forest and mountains.

 Return to Arusha or Moshi
As the afternoon sun begins to dip, bid farewell to your hosts and begin the return journey to your hotel, taking with you a deep appreciation for Tanzania’s natural and cultural richness.
