Overview
This 10-day Mount Meru + Kilimanjaro Rongai Route itinerary is designed for maximum acclimatization, fewer crowds, and higher summit success. Climbing Mount Meru (4,566m) first prepares your body for altitude before tackling Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) via the remote northern Rongai Route.
This combination is ideal for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers, photographers, and travelers who want a well-paced, professionally guided mountain experience.
Detailed Itinerary
Altitude: 1,500m → 2,514m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive to Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park for registration and briefing. Begin the trek through open grassland and lush montane forest, accompanied by an armed ranger due to wildlife presence.
Expect sightings of giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Arrive at Miriakamba Hut in the afternoon for dinner and overnight.

Altitude: 2,514m → 3,570m → 3,820m → 3,570m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours + 1–2 hours
After breakfast, continue ascending through forest and heath vegetation toward Saddle Hut, located between Mount Meru and Little Meru. Enjoy impressive views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone.
After lunch and a short rest, take a late afternoon / early evening acclimatization hike to Little Meru Peak (3,820m). This hike significantly improves altitude adaptation and increases summit success. Descend back to Saddle Hut before sunset for dinner and rest.

Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
Around midnight, begin the summit ascent to Socialist Peak (4,566m), following a steep and dramatic ridgeline. Reach the summit at sunrise and enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift Valley, and Ngorongoro Highlands.
After photos, descend to Saddle Hut for brunch, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight rest.

Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
Descend through lush forest back to Momella Gate. Receive your Mount Meru climbing certificate and transfer back to Arusha.
The remainder of the day is for rest, gear check, and preparation for Kilimanjaro.

Drive from Arusha to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. After registration, begin trekking through farmland and pine forest to Simba Camp.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Continue ascending through moorland vegetation with expansive views of the Kenyan plains. Arrive at Second Cave Camp for overnight.

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
A shorter hiking day allows for acclimatization. Trek toward Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley near Mawenzi Peak.

Ascend steadily to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, dramatically situated beneath the spires of Mawenzi Peak. Afternoon acclimatization walks are encouraged.

Altitude: 4,330m → 5,895m → 3,720m
Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
Depart around midnight for the summit push via Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate at the summit before descending to Horombo Camp.

Altitude: 3,720m → 1,860m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Final descent through rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate, then transfer back to Arusha or onward to your next destination.
