Frequently Asked Questions

About the Great Migration Safari & Zanzibar Vacation

What is the best time of year to go on a safari in Tanzania?

The ideal time for a Tanzania safari depends on personal preferences. The dry season (June to October) is favored for wildlife viewing, as animals tend to gather around water sources. However, this period is also the most popular and busiest. Alternatively, the wet season (November to May) provides lush landscapes and fewer crowds, though some animals may be harder to spot due to thicker vegetation.

What should be packed for a safari in Tanzania?

Travelers are advised to bring lightweight, neutral-colored clothing, sturdy walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Additional essentials include binoculars, a camera with extra batteries, and any necessary medications. Since temperatures can vary throughout the day, layered clothing is also recommended.

Is a visa required to enter Tanzania?

In most cases, a tourist visa is required and can be obtained upon arrival or online prior to travel. Visa requirements differ depending on the traveler’s nationality, so it is important to verify the most current information before your trip.

Is Tanzania safe for tourists on safari?

Tanzania is considered generally safe for tourists, especially those on guided safaris. Standard precautions should be followed, such as staying updated on travel advisories, avoiding unpopulated areas after dark, and listening to the guidance of professional tour operators.

What types of safari accommodations are available?

A wide range of accommodation is offered, from luxury lodges and tented camps to budget-friendly campsites. Luxury options typically include private bathrooms, gourmet dining, and sometimes swimming pools, while tented camps offer a closer-to-nature experience with communal dining and simpler facilities.

What wildlife is commonly seen on safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania offers exceptional wildlife viewing, including sightings of the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard. In addition, animals such as cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, and a variety of bird species can often be spotted, especially during the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Are safaris suitable for children?

Yes, many safari providers offer family-friendly packages, which may include shorter game drives, child-oriented activities, and family suites. However, the suitability of a safari depends on the age and interests of the child, so customized planning is advised.

How long does a typical safari last?

Safari durations vary widely. Most range from 3 to 10 days, depending on the chosen parks and experiences. Short safaris may focus on a single destination, while longer journeys may include several parks or a combination of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Tailor-made itineraries are available to meet specific travel needs.
